The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, today announced the retirement of General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (Ret’d) as Chairman of the Council of the Australian War Memorial.
Mr Snowdon said General Cosgrove has made an outstanding contribution to the work of the Council for almost nine years, spending four of those leading the Council as Chairman.
“I would like to thank General Cosgrove for that contribution over that time, his work has ensured the Australian War Memorial has continued to be a place of commemoration, reflection and learning revered by all Australians,” he said.
“General Cosgrove provided an experienced and steady hand as a part of the Council, and I wish him well for the future.” 
Mr Snowdon said the Council has elected Rear Admiral Ken Doolan AO RAN (Ret’d) as the new Chairman.
“I welcome Rear Admiral Doolan to the role. His experience in commemorative and veterans’ issues will be invaluable in helping to plan for activities marking the centenary of the First World War,” Mr Snowdon said.
Rear Admiral Doolan is currently the National President of the Returned and Services League, and an ex-officio member of the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board.
The Council of the Australian War Memorial comprises of up to 10 part-time members and includes the Chiefs of Navy, Army, and Air Force as ex-officio members. As part of the continuing legacy of commemorating Australia’s wartime service, the Council is responsible for the corporate governance of the Australian War Memorial.
