The incident occurred on Monday just before midday, 60km north-west of Tarin Kowt in the Shahid-e-Hasa region of Oruzgan province.

The three wounded soldiers from Mentoring Task Force 3 were treated at the scene then flown by helicopter to the medical facility at Tarin Kowt.

The wounds were sustained during an operational mission and the soldiers have been classified as having been "wounded in action".

They were hurt after their Bushmaster struck the IED. All three are now in a "satisfactory condition".

"One soldier has been transported to the Role 1 medical facility at Al Minhad Air base before returning to Australia where he is expected to make a full recovery," a statement from the Defence Department said.

"The other two soldiers have been discharged and are being managed as outpatients.

"Their wounds are not life threatening and their families have been notified."

A total of 32 Australians have been killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan, 11 of them last year. The latest three deaths to occur were at the hands of a rogue Afghan soldier who was being mentored by Australian personnel.

A total of 216 Australian soldiers have been wounded since 2002.

The Australian revealed in November that only a handful of  Australian soldiers seriously wounded in Afghanistan had returned to active duty, underlining the magnitude of the challenge to treat and rehabilitate casualties of the war.

The most common injuries sustained by Australian personnel include amputations, fractures, gun shot wounds, penetrating fragments and traumatic brain injury.

Of the 50 soldiers wounded last year in action in Afghanistan, 18 were injured by improvised bombs, 16 were wounded in fire fights and during operations and one was accidentally wounded while conducting clearance operations. Five aircrew were hurt in a helicopter crash.
